Popular Questions from Northfield Vets

Is sterilization necessary for cats and dogs?

Spaying and neutering are standard procedures that greatly benefit the health of animals. For female dogs and cats, spaying alleviates the stress and discomfort associated with heat cycles. This surgery removes the risk of ovarian and uterine cancers, as well as infections of the uterus, like pyometra. Additionally, it significantly lowers the chances of developing mammary cancer.

Do neutered dogs and cats live longer?

A University of Georgia study, based on the medical records of more than 70,000 animal patients, found that the life expectancy of neutered male dogs was 13.8% longer and that of spayed female dogs was 26.3% longer.

Another study, conducted by Banfield Pet Hospitals on data from a population of 2.2 million dogs and 460,000 cats, reflected similar findings, concluding that neutered male dogs lived 18% longer and spayed female dogs lived 23% longer. Spayed female cats in the study lived 39% longer, and neutered male cats lived 62% longer.

What happens if I don't sterilize my dog & cat?

Male dogs that are not neutered may develop enlarged prostates, which can lead to urination and bowel problems. Additionally, they are at risk of developing prostate infections. Female dogs face the risk of infections and cancers as well.

Escaping, fighting, and infections can pose significant risks to your pet. Sterilization helps to reduce the likelihood of these dangerous situations and can also increase a cat’s life expectancy. Statistically, a non-sterilized cat typically lives between 6 to 10 years, while a sterilized cat can live between 13 to 18 years.

How to choose the right vet practice for your pet?

When assessing a veterinary practice, it is important to seek feedback on the veterinarian’s communication skills, how effectively they explain diagnoses and treatment options, their compassion, and the effectiveness of the treatments provided. Consider the clinic’s location and hours. A convenient location makes check-ups and emergencies more accessible.
